Winter driving in the UK brings ice, heavy rain, fog and reduced daylight. If you are hiring a vehicle you are less familiar with, a few extra precautions go a long way.
Before You Set Off
- Clear all windows and mirrors completely — not just a peephole in the windscreen.
- Check tyres, lights and washer fluid. Report any issues to NVR before leaving.
- Plan routes that favour treated main roads where possible.
On the Road
Increase following distance, brake gently and avoid sudden steering inputs on icy surfaces. In a van, remember that extra weight and height affect braking and stability — especially when loaded.
Be Prepared
Pack a charged phone, warm clothing and a torch. If conditions are severe, consider whether the journey is essential.
